Self awareness is not just a key skill to be an effective employee. It’s also really important over the festive season with friends and family. Whilst the Christmas holidays can be a wonderful time of celebration, it can also be a highly stressful time of year, cooped up for enforced festivities. So if tensions start to fray, take a step back and try and recognise how you could adapt your communication and approach.
For example, if you have a preference for introversion, make sure you take some time out to recharge your batteries in private so you don’t end up exhausted and cranky, but explain why it’s important to those around you. Equally, if you lead with an extraversion preference, leave your introverted little brother in peace every now and again.
If you have a preference for making decisions with your heart not your head, don’t be upset when your auntie doesn’t agree with your ideas, because she may have taken a more logical approach due to her thinking preference. It’s not a question of right or wrong, just different.
For those of you who use Insights Discovery(c) as a framework to understand yourself and others better, have you thought about what colour preferences your friends and family lead with? Does your mum lead with cool blue? Earth green for Grandpa? Fiery Red with a sprinkling of sunshine yellow for your sister? If so, what small tweaks can you make to ensure peace and goodwill?
If you want to continue to develop your understanding of yourself and others in 2017, to improve your effectiveness both at work and home, please get in touch to find out how we can help.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
